Describe DFI.
DFI (DNA Fragmentation Index) is a measure of degree of DNA damage in a sample, typically sperm cells.
It is an essential tool for identifying possible sperm damage and assessing the quality of semen.
Male reproductive potential and embryo development have been found to be impacted by the presence of fragmented DNA in sperm. It may also contribute to unsuccessful IVF attempts and repeated miscarriages.
Men with advanced age, varicocele and external genital irritation, bad lifestyle choices including smoking and drinking, and exposure to radiation and pollution are more likely to have high DFI levels.
Benefits & Losses
Benefits:
- This process enables us to determine whether or not the male partner's semen sample may be used. We advise using a sperm donor if the degree of fragmentation is greater.
Dangers:
- The health of the male partner is unaffected by the risks associated with sperm DNA fragmentation. The method does appear to have certain limits, though.
