A report by Statista showcased that the total fertility rate in India decreased by 0.1 children per women in 2020 and the figures are staggering owing to our atrocious lifestyle changes. The total fertility rate is defined as the number of children a woman of childbearing age can hypothetically expect to have throughout her reproductive years and it is reducing substantially. When infertility has become a widespread problem across India and the world, IVF can significantly help for those couples who want to conceive, but can’t due to any physiological or genetic problems.

Infertility & IVF Treatment

How is IVF performed?

IVF treatment is a protracted process that must be followed step by step. It has several steps, and a patient may typically need to repeat one or more of them. With IVF, the sperm and egg are fertilized outside of your uterus (in a lab) and then implanted as an embryo in your uterus.
IUI is both cheaper and less intrusive than IVF. Per cycle, IUI’s success rate is lower than IVF success rate.

Step 1: Start your therapy

  • The first step in the IVF process is for the doctor to choose the most advantageous time throughout your menstrual cycle. Several eggs must mature before IVF may be used.

Step 2: Stimulating the ovaries

  • The doctor will now stimulate the ovaries to encourage the development of the egg-containing follicles. Follicle hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) are the most frequently seen hormones in drugs that are used to stimulate the follicles. The IVF doctor and the team at our IVF centre observe react to the drugs after injection.

Step 3: Injecting the trigger

  • The ovarian stimulation would stop if the doctor determined that there were enough egg follicles in the ovaries. The doctor would halt the LH and FSH injections during this phase and suggest the best time to start trigger injections. Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is injected as part of the trigger injection to develop the eggs and aid in their emergence from the ovarian follicle wall.

How does a fertility clinic operate?

After hormone therapy and an ultrasound to determine ovulation, the woman's egg is taken up and placed in a glass dish in the lab with her husband's sperms, where one of the sperms will fertilise it. This is the most often used technique of infertility therapy, with success rates of 40-50% every cycle.

Common myths and misconceptions about IVF treatment

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a widely used treatment for couples experiencing infertility. Despite its popularity, there are several misconceptions about IVF that can lead to confusion and anxiety for those considering IVF treatment. One popular misconception is that IVF treatment results in multiple births. While multiple pregnancies can be a risk of the IVF procedure, modern technology has reduced this risk, and most IVF cycles result in a single pregnancy. Additionally, some people believe that IVF is only for women. However, the IVF process can be used to address male infertility or fertility issues in both partners. Contrary to popular belief, IVF treatment is not always painful. While some discomfort may be experienced, most patients report only mild side effects.

How long does the IVF procedure take from start to finish?

IVF is a lengthy procedure with several phases. On average, the procedure will take four to six weeks. This encompasses the interval between taking fertility medication before egg harvesting and being tested for pregnancy.

How do you prepare for IVF ( Infertility ) treatment?

A complete medical evaluation and fertility testing are required before beginning IVF therapy. In India, the average IVF treatment cost per cycle might range between Rs. 125,000 and Rs. 180,000.

Your companion will also be inspected and tested. Among the preparations you'll go through are:

    • Consultation for IVF (meet with healthcare providers to discuss the details of the IVF process).
    • A uterine exam, Pap test, and mammography are all recommended (if over 40).
    • A sperm analysis.
    • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and other infectious disorders are screened for.
    • Blood and urine tests, as well as ovarian reserve testing.
    • Instructions for using fertility medicines.
    • Screening for genetic carriers.
    • Fill out permission forms.
    • Evaluation of the uterine cavity (hysteroscopy or saline-infused sonography (SIS)).

The role of nutrition and lifestyle factors in IVF treatment

If you want to go for IVF infertility treatment, nutrition and lifestyle play a vital role in the success. It’s crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle before going to the IVF centre, and during and after the IVF treatment. Here are a few key areas to focus on:

    • Diet: A well-balanced diet rich in nutrients, such as protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, is essential for a healthy pregnancy. Foods high in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, may also be beneficial for improving egg quality and embryo development.
    • Exercise: Moderate exercise can improve overall health and may also enhance fertility by reducing stress and improving circulation. However, strenuous exercise should be avoided during the infertility treatment.
    • Weight: Maintaining a healthy weight is important for infertility treatment and can improve the chances of success with IVF. Obesity can negatively impact egg quality and increase the risk of complications during pregnancy, while being underweight can reduce fertility.
    • Stress management: High levels of stress can negatively impact fertility and reduce the success rates of IVF. Finding ways to manage stress, such as through relaxation techniques or therapy, can improve the chances of a successful pregnancy.
    • Smoking and alcohol: Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can harm fertility and increase the risk of complications during pregnancy. It is important to quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption before and during the infertility treatment.
