Marsupialization for the Treatment of Bartholin Cysts

Marsupialization is a simple surgical operation that can be performed under local/spinal/general anaesthesia depending on the severity of the cyst and the patient's preferences.
The gynaecologist makes a nick to drain the fluid before gently enlarging the incision to form a temporary 'kangaroo pouch' on the labial lips. This helps to facilitate greater drainage over a few weeks. If necessary, the incision ends may be sewn together or a catheter may be inserted to drain the pus.
This approach helps force the whole pus out of the cyst, which may or may not be visible to the human eye, and so helps avoid a recurrence of the Bartholin cyst.
