What exactly is abortion?

Abortion is defined as the medical termination of an undesired pregnancy (MTP), and there are two types: medical abortion and surgical abortion. Medical abortion, also known as medical termination of pregnancy (MTP), is the use of chemicals or a combination of treatments to end a pregnancy. Surgical abortion, also known as surgical termination of pregnancy, is a process in which an obstetrician-gynecologist removes the pregnancy from the uterus using surgical instruments.

Diagnosis & Procedure

Diagnosis
Before proceeding with the abortion process, the OB-GYN may recommend diagnostic testing such as a pelvic ultrasound, blood tests, and urine tests.

A pelvic ultrasound is performed to confirm the length and type of pregnancy (normal pregnancy, molar pregnancy, or ectopic pregnancy.)

On the other hand, urine and blood tests are used to screen for medical disorders such as anemia, diabetes, high or low blood pressure, or sexually transmitted illnesses. The OB-GYN decides on the technique of abortion and begins the procedure based on the results of the diagnostic tests.

Procedure
In the instance of a medical abortion, the OB-GYN will provide two medications, Mifepristone and Misoprostol. The initial medication is administered at the clinic in the presence of the OB-GYN. Following that, the OB-GYN recommends that the mother take The second medication should be taken within 48 hours. The second medication can be administered at home or at the clinic. The abortion process begins within 24 hours of taking the second medication.

In the instance of surgical abortion, however, the OB-GYN performs surgical procedures to remove the embryo from the uterus. The OB-GYN uses a speculum to examine inside the vagina and clears the vagina as well as the cervix during the surgical abortion. The doctor then numbs the cervix with medicine, dilates it with sophisticated medical equipment, inserts a narrow flexible tube into the uterus, and gently removes the embryo and pregnancy tissue.
