Types of Abortion and Procedures
There are two forms of abortion: medical and surgical. Let us examine how both methods of abortion operate:
Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP): A medical abortion is performed using medications and tablets. It is advised for ladies who are less than four weeks pregnant. The following drugs or tablets can be used to terminate a pregnancy medically:
- Oral mifepristone (Mifeprex) with misoprostol (Cytotec)
- Oral mifepristone with vaginal or sublingual misoprostol
- Methotrexate with vaginal misoprostol
Abortion by surgery: A surgical abortion is a technique that terminates a pregnancy by removing the pregnancy tissue (the fetus and placenta) from the uterus.
There are two types of surgical abortions: dilation and evacuation and dilation and curettage.
Dilation and evacuating: This treatment is often performed during the second trimester. During this surgery, the gynecologist removes the fetus and placenta via the cervix with thin forceps.
Curettage and dilation: This operation is often performed during the first [pregnancy] trimester. The surgeon will first widen your cervix to allow tissue to be removed from your uterus, either using a loop-shaped curette device or a suction curettage that operates like a little vacuum.
Both medical and surgical treatments are equally safe and successful. Therefore, it is critical that you make an educated decision before undergoing therapy.
