Everything You Need to Know About Abortion Pills and Safe Abortion

The tabboo surrounding MTPs is unreal, but abortion is as normal as any other surgical methods.Abortion can often save the mother's life in cases of ectopic pregnancies and other such issues. There are several abortion pills available in the market but you need professional guidance and recommendation before availing of such procedures.

What is abortion?
First and foremost, abortion is a legal healthcare procedure in India. So, married and unmarried women can seek abortion care regardless of their financial, health and other conditions. However, you must remember that abortion can only be performed within the first 18 to 20 weeks of the pregnancy.

What are the types of abortion?
As mentioned earlier, abortion is the process of medically ending a pregnancy. There are primarily two different methods of conducting an abortion. Medical abortion, where certain medications and abortion pills will be used to end the abortion. And, procedural abortion where specialist doctors and surgeons will perform surgery to remove the pregnancy from the uterus.

Is abortion safe for future pregnancies?
In medical science, no two cases are the same, which is why doctors and specialists never reach any conclusion without reviewing every patient's history and current conditions. However, even if it is an IVF process or an abortionusually has no impact on any future pregnancies. All procedures of abortion; be it, surgical or medical must be conducted by a licensed physician under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act 1971.

When can I get an abortion?
Recently India has been aligned as one of the most progressive countries in the world in terms of abortion laws. However, getting an abortion here is not a simple and straightforward process. Under the MTP Act 1971, there are only three conditions under which women can get an abortion.

  • If the pregnancy poses any risk to the physical and mental well-being of the person carrying the pregnancy
  • If the pregnancy is the product of rape or incest or happened due to contraceptive failure
  • If the fetus has any severe medical abnormalities

What is the process of diagnosis for pregnancy?
Before you get an abortion, you need medical confirmation of pregnancy. In this case, a licensed medical practitioner will perform an Ultrasound on your abdomen. Ultrasound uses audio waves to construct an image of the abdominal organs to determine the pregnancy. You can also be prescribed a transvaginal ultrasound within two months or 6 to 8 weeks, of your pregnancy before getting the abortion.

What are the risks and complications of abortion?
Much like any other medical procedure abortion also comes with its own set of risks and complications. However, a licensed medical practitioner is trained to deal with such complications and help you get a risk-free abortion. But, if you get an abortion from any place other than a licensed practitioner or location it can result in grave complications. These risks include future pregnancies, infection, incomplete abortion, risk of infertility and in some cases death.
